Setting up allowed origins with IAP

Trying to use CORS to make an AJAX request to an API hosted on App Engine and secured by IAP.
I'm running into this error:
... has been blocked by CORS policy: Response to preflight request doesn't pass access control check: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin'

Ok, so I need to somehow tell IAP about the host I'm making the AJAX call from. But how? I've tried the app.yaml, but my handler is a script type. And if I just try adding the headers programatically in the server code that doesn't work either - most likely because the preflight request doesn't include the authorization header (should it?) so it never even executes the request handler.
